about
Although he was born in Paris, Charles Aznavour inherited the immigrant experiences and problems of his parents. They escaped the genocide of Armenians, fleeing from Smyrna to France. In this song, Aznavour addresses the obstacles to integration and the hurdles of ≈joining in the dance« of the locals, who were lucky enough to be born in the right place.
“He crosses walls of hate / Abysses of misunderstandings / At each new border/ Finally the hope of staying/ (...) The whole world is drenched in hate / The heavens above haven’t a clue / (...) Linking hands, the lucky ones spin in a circle / No way of stepping into the dance / (...) Just look at him / How he wanders / aimlessly / like a sleepwalker / And they point their fingers at him …”
---
