La Folia - one of the greatest pop hits in the history of music in the Western world. It’s rooted in the folk tradition of Portugal and Spain, and was at its height in the 16th and 17th centuries. Up until the 20th century, La Folia served as a model for compositions and improvisations. Technically, it’s a kind of Passacaglia, a repeating harmonic and melodic pattern, with variations. It’s derived from the time when instrumentalists were improvisers as well as composers and no line was drawn between serious and entertainment music. And this is precisely the tradition that I want to revive through my six variations. Incidentally, this was the musical part of my master’s thesis - I’ll spare you the theoretical section.

La Folia - einer der größten Pophits der abendländischen Musikgeschichte. Seine Wurzeln hat dieser in den Volkstraditionen Portugals und Spaniens, seine Blüte im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert erlebt. La Folia diente bis ins 20. Jahrhundert als Kompositions- und Improvisationsvorlage. Formal ist sie eine Art Passacaglia, ein sich wiederholendes harmonisches und melodisches Schema, über das variiert wird. Sie stammt aus der Zeit, als Instrumentalisten sowohl Improvisatoren als auch Komponisten waren und es die Unterteilung in E- und U-Musik noch nicht gab. Und eben diese Tradition will ich durch meine sechs Variationen wiederaufleben lassen. Übrigens war dieses Stück der musikalische Teil meiner Masterarbeit, den theoretischen erspare ich euch.
