I Brought My Kids Up Well
by Tamar Radzyner (translation by Joe & Gay Giordano)
I brought my kids up well
just as society proscribed
which doesn't mean born well,
for who would know how that's effected?
I only did my duty
and thus indeed
I got
a pretty good result.
My kids I firmly did advise
to hold back the best for themselves
the coolest toys are not for gifting,
lest failure raise its ugly head.
The children catch on promptly
and so
quickly understand
that good means dumb.
To my children I earnestly explained
Staying in your corner is to be a loser!
Life must be snatched with teeth, like meat!
Only as an animal can man prevail.
The children's claws
have grown sharp and shiny
for which all thanks
belong to me.
I counseled them that thinking was allowed,
but letting on, a big mistake.
They think "shit" but say "thanks",
and when passion overcomes them, they say "amore".
One listens with excitement
and quickly understands
they may join the pack now
they have ripened.
I was able to guard my children
from ideas and most ideals,
they mistrust all people, and they know
that life is short and all there is.
Now ready to fight
blow by blow,
with knives
to the hunt they go.
I demanded, I forbade
according to received rules and norms,
they were helpless, full of trust,
they looked up and thus by me were formed.
Shaped by a sense of duty
and talent too—
all who know my kids
tell me so.
By right I should be hanged in public,
from the gallows my last words I wouldn't deride:
The verdict's just. I have committed
treason, betrayal, and infanticide.
But no one hangs me.
no, on the contrary
as a mother I am judged as
beyond reproach.
Beyond reproach...?
