The English folksong Sovay or The Female Highwayman from the 18th century deals with an unusual token of love: The young Sovay dresses up as a Highwayman, a bandit, in order to ambush her lover. And then she demands the very golden ring she gave him to pledge their love. He won’t surrender it, not even over his dead body. Satisfied, she rides away. The next day she confesses she would’ve killed him had he handed over the ring.
I heard the song for the first time in the brilliant rendition by Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick, where they keep using odd beats. This slight Balkanization of the rhythm probably originates with their teacher, the folk singer, ethno-musicologist and Marxist A. L. Lloyd, who took field recordings in Albania and Bulgaria. Please forgive my de-Balkanization of the song.

Der englische Folksong Sovay or The Female Highwayman aus dem 18. Jahrhundert behandelt einen ungewöhnlichen Liebesbeweis: Die junge Sovay verkleidet sich als Highwayman, als Straßenräuber, um ihren Geliebten zu überfallen. Und dann fordert sie von ihm jenen Goldring, den sie ihm als Pfand ihrer gemeinsamen Liebe geschenkt hat. Nur über seine Leiche würde er ihn hergeben. Zufrieden reitet sie davon. Am nächsten Tag gesteht sie ihm, dass sie bereit gewesen wäre, ihn zu töten, wenn er ihr den Ring ausgehändigt hätte.
Ich hörte das Lied erstmals in der genialen Version von Martin Carthy und Dave Swarbrick, in der sie immer wieder ungerade Takte verwenden. Diese leichte Balkanisierung des Rhythmus stammt wahrscheinlich von ihrem Lehrer, dem Folksinger und Ethnomusikologen A. L. Lloyd, der auch Feldaufnahmen in Albanien und Bulgarien gemacht hatte. Ich habe das Lied, verzeiht mir, wieder entbalkanisiert.
